Does anyone have any suggestions or comments pertaining to being an independent contractor at a local gym? Also, what would be a good base fee per session for a new CPT if deciding to be an independent contractor? I would really appreciate the help, Thanks :)

Hi Letticia,

If you have a gym in mind I would check to see what the going rates are for the various trainers. I would also check to see what the going rate for training is in you area. Keep in mind that when independent contracting for a gym that the gym will take a cut of your training fees. This could be anywhere from 20% to 50%, so see what the cut is and remember that you have to make a living so don't price to low. Also, remember that you are not just charging for the hour that you are spending with them but also for the time you spend on designing there programs.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Stacy,

I will definitely keep in mind that even out of the gym I will be working on my clients. I know what the monthly flat rate will be for the gym I am looking into, so from there I should be able to determine what price I will charge.

Thank you again,
Letticia

I forgot to mention that as an Independent contractor you will be responsible for paying your own taxes. So, you will have a monthly fee for the gym and then have to pay self-employment tax which is 15.3%. This covers soc-security, etc... This is if you have set yourself up as an sole proprietor.

For instance, lets say you get a 1000 dollar check from the gym. You will want to save at least 15.3% or 153 dollars for Uncle Sam.

Not only all this but keep in mind how much you want to make. That's important.

a good base pay would be 20-30 depending on your cert and even your area.
